Eggs

About our flock:

For the 2011 CSA season we well be maintaining a smaller flock and will have fewer egg shares available. Egg shares will be accepted until we run out. Egg shares will be assigned in the order that we receive member applications. To be certain of having an egg share, please submit your membership before January 31st, which is when we order our day-old chicks for the season.  (It takes 18 weeks from hatching to produce an adult hen capable of laying eggs.)

Out flock lives out on our lush pastures during the warmer months eating grass and insects. We supplement them with certified organic feed which contains no animal protein. They also are the beneficiaries of produce that's just not quite perfect enough to take to the farmer's market.

A diet rich in fresh foods (and chickens that are well cared for) results in delicious eggs. When you compare our eggs to grocery store eggs you will find that the yolks are brighter yellow from the vitamin A the chickens get from the grass and that the yolk and egg whites 'stand up' because they are so fresh. You will also notice a richer flavor. Try some and find out.

Our hens are mostly brown hybrid egg layers, but because we love chickens we have many other breeds as well, such as Barred Cochins, Black Langshan and Aracuana (the famous green egg laying chickens.)
